Design time is a precious commodity nowadays and waiting for shapes to repour each time an adjustment is made is no longer an option. The shape creation management tool within OrCAD allows you to easily create and adjust shapes in real-time. Now you can work smarter, not harder.
This document is intended to provide step by step instructions on shape creation and management using OrCAD PCB Designer Professional. For this workshop, download the design files and use the provided design, Shapes_Start.BRD, to follow along. To view the completed design, select Shapes_Finish.BRD.
- Open the provided design, Shapes_Start.BRD, in OrCAD PCB Designer Professional.
- Select Shape > Z-Copy from the menu.
- In the Options Tab, set Copy to Class/Subclass to Etch and LYR2_GND.
- Check Create Dynamic Shape.
- Select the board outline. Right click and select Done (F6).
- Select Shape > Select Shape or Isolation/Cavity from the menu.
- Select the newly created shape.
- Right Click and choose Assign Net.
- Select net DGND.
- Right click and Select Done (F6).
- In the Visibility Tab, check off Layer 2 GND and select Top.
- Select Package Geometry/Assembly_Top.
- Select Route > Connect from the menu (F3).
- Select net RXN on P5.
- Click to place trace.
- Right click and select Done (F6).
- Select Setup > Application Mode > Placement Edit from the menu.
- Select C55.
- Move C55 in the VDD_Core shape. Click to place.
- Select C11.
- Right click and select Rotate.
- Rotate the part. Click to accept the rotation.
- Move C11 in the VDD_Core shape. Click to place.
- Select Setup > Application Mode > Shape Edit from the menu.
- Select Shape > Rectangular from the menu.
- Right Click and select Assign Net.
- Select the VDD_5V pin on U2.
Note: The VDD_5V pin on U2 is color coded red for easy identification.
- Click to begin the rectangular shape.
- Click to place the shape.
- Draw another rectangle encompassing the VDD_5V pad on P1.
- Right Click and select Done (F6).
- Select Shape > Merge Shapes from the menu.
- Select both two rectangular shapes.
- Select Shape > Edit Boundary from the menu.
- Select the newly created shape.
- Click to draw the desired boundary.
- Right click and select Done (F6).
- In the Options Tab, select Chamfer. Set the value to 25.
- Click the corners of the shape to chamfer.
With design time being a precious commodity, the days of waiting for shapes to repour each time an adjustment is made are long gone. With OrCAD you can easily create and adjust shapes in real-time, no waiting necessary.
